In Memoriam: Christina Chung-Lun Wang, MD 1944-2026
Past President of the American Society of Andrology
It is with deep sadness that the American Society of Andrology (ASA) announces the passing of Christina Chung-Lun Wang, M.D., after battling untreatable cancer. She passed away peacefully on June 10, 2026, surrounded by her family.
Dr. Wang was a past president of our Society 2006-7, and a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award 2011 and the Distinguished Andrologist Award 2013. She had incredible energy and served the ASA tirelessly. Andrology has lost one of its icons, and we have lost an inspiring colleague, wonderful friend and for many, an ardent mentor.
Born on May 20, 1944 in Nanjing, China, Dr. Wang received her medical degree from the University of Hong Kong with the 1968 John Anderson Gold Medal (proxime accessit) – one of the highest honors for the graduating class. She completed postgraduate training in medicine and endocrinology in Hong Kong and Australia and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 1975. She dedicated two decades of her work in Hong Kong where she attained the rank of Professor of Medicine and became Chief, Division of Endocrinology, Queen Mary Hospital. She moved to Los Angeles in 1989, to Cedars Sinai Medical Center as Director of Andrology services and then in 1993 to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where she would conclude more than three decades of her career becoming a Distinguished Professor and Assistant Dean in the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and Senior Associate Director of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute at The Lundquist Institute.
Dr. Wang’s career had global impact on male reproductive biology. She served as Chairperson of the World Health Organization’s Task Force on Methods for the Regulation of Male Fertility from 1991 to 2002, where she helped to design landmark multicenter trials aimed at developing safe, effective, and reversible hormonal male contraception. She also served on the editorial board of the WHO Laboratory Manual for the Examination of Human Semen, which is the gold standard reference for the assessment of male fertility, from its first edition in 1980 to its last in 2021. Over the course of her career she authored more than 350 peer-reviewed publications and 70 chapters and reviews on male hormonal contraception, androgen development and therapy, the assessment of male hypogonadism and the molecular mechanisms underpinning testicular stress and germ cell death. This worldwide recognition led to her election as President of the International Society of Andrology (ISA) 2009-2013.
In conjunction with her scientific career, Dr. Wang was passionate about recognizing, encouraging and supporting promising young andrologists from around the world. Through her leadership positions at WHO, ISA and ASA, she ensured that generations of these talented young colleagues became established leaders in our field across many nations. Her mentees are testament of her ongoing legacy to Andrology.
