Dear colleagues,
It is with deep sadness that I share the news that Dr. Stuart S. Howards passed away on Sunday, October 4.
Stuart’s career spanned more than six decades and shaped modern urology in ways few others have. After training at Yale, Columbia, the Brigham, and the NIH, he built his academic home at the University of Virginia, where he became a leading authority on male reproductive medicine and later continued teaching at Wake Forest. His work, including the textbook Infertility in the Male, helped define the field for generations of clinicians.
Beyond his scholarship, Stuart devoted himself to the profession. He led the American Board of Urology for many years, served as an officer of the American Association of Genito-Urinary Surgeons, and was a longtime leader of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. His stewardship of these institutions upheld the standards that protect patients and the integrity of our specialty. The AUA recognized him with the Gold Cystoscope, Distinguished Service, and Hugh Hampton Young awards.
For me, his legacy is deeply personal. I will always be grateful for his mentorship, wisdom, generosity, and the confidence he placed in me throughout my career. His impact will continue through the many physicians, trainees, colleagues, and patients whose lives he touched.
Rest in peace, Dr. Howards. You will be deeply missed.
